Claude is an AI assistant made by Anthropic. Its Google Workspace add-on opens Claude in a sidebar next to the file you have open in Google Docs, Sheets or Slides. Claude reads that file and edits it in place, and by default it asks you before each change.

The add-on is a beta from Anthropic, not a Google product. It is separate from Gemini, which comes with your Google Workspace plan (see [what is Gemini](/gemini-what-is/)).

## What you need

Check these three things before you install the add-on:

- **A paid Claude plan**: Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise. You buy it from Anthropic at [claude.ai](https://claude.ai), not through Office Niaga, and it is billed separately from Google Workspace.
- **Chrome, Edge or Safari** on a computer. Firefox does not work.
- **Permission to install Marketplace apps** on your Google account. Many companies block this, and then only an admin can install Claude.

If your company has a Claude Team or Enterprise plan, sign in to Claude with the work account your company gave you, so your company's terms apply to what you share.

## Install Claude for yourself

Use these steps if your company lets staff install Marketplace apps. One install covers Docs, Sheets and Slides.

1. Open the Claude listing in the [Google Workspace Marketplace](https://workspace.google.com/marketplace/app/claude/12459801340) (**Claude**, by Anthropic).

2. Click **Install** and choose your work Google account.
3. Read the permissions and allow them. Claude asks for two things: to show its sidebar inside Google apps, and to see and edit the document, sheet or presentation where you open it.
4. Reload any Docs, Sheets or Slides file that is already open.
5. In a file, click **Extensions > Claude > Open Claude**, then sign in to your Claude account in the sidebar.

## Ask Claude to do something

Type what you want in the sidebar box and press Enter. Claude works on the open file only, so say which part you mean. These are some tasks that work well:

- **Docs:** "Rewrite the second section so it is shorter and more formal", "Turn this list of prices into a table", or "Check this agreement for terms that are used but never defined".
- **Sheets:** "Explain the formula in F2", "Fix the #REF! errors in column H", or "Add a tab with total sales by month and a chart".
- **Slides:** "Make three slides from the notes on slide 2", "Split slide 5 into two slides", or "Make all slide titles the same font and size".

You can pick a different Claude model from the model picker in the sidebar. The models you see depend on your Claude plan.

## Approve or skip each edit

The sidebar has two modes. Choose the one that fits how much you trust the task:

- **Ask before edits** (the default): Claude shows each planned change on a card with a summary. Click to approve it, or skip it.
- **Accept all edits**: Claude makes ordinary text and layout changes straight away.

Even in Accept all edits, Claude stops and asks before it adds a link, inserts an image from the web, or changes who can open the file. Claude cannot share a file, give access to anyone or change the owner.

In Docs, Claude's changes are made directly to the text, not as suggestions. Use **File > Version history** to go back if you need to (see [version history](/docs-version-history/)).

## What Claude can see

Google lets the add-on open only the file you started it in. It cannot look through your Drive, Gmail or other files.

Your company's Claude admin can also turn on **connectors**, such as Google Drive. A connector you turn on in the **+** menu lets Claude read from that service too. You set up connectors at claude.ai, not in the sidebar.

Anthropic says content from the add-on is not used to train its models, and is deleted within 30 days. On Team and Enterprise plans your company's commercial agreement with Anthropic applies. On Pro and Max, Anthropic's consumer terms apply, so do not use a personal Claude account for company files unless your company agrees. Do not use the add-on for patient health information.

## What it cannot do yet

The add-on is a beta, and these are the main limits Anthropic lists today:

- It works on one open file at a time, and one task can run for up to six minutes. For a longer job, ask Claude to continue, or split the job.
- It cannot make a copy of the file or export a PDF.
- **Docs:** it cannot read or reply to comments, accept or reject suggestions, or work with document tabs.
- **Sheets:** it cannot read BigQuery Connected Sheets, or add triggers or custom menus.
- **Slides:** charts go in as pictures, so they do not update when the data changes.

## For admins: install or allow Claude for your company

A Google Workspace super admin can install Claude for everyone, or for some departments, from the Google Admin console. Staff then see it in the Extensions menu without installing it themselves. Each person still needs their own paid Claude account.

1. Sign in to the [Google Admin console](https://admin.google.com) as a super admin.
2. Go to **Apps > Google Workspace Marketplace apps > Apps list**.
3. Click **Install app**, then search for **Claude** by Anthropic and open it.
4. Click **Admin install**, then **Continue**.
5. Check the data access that Claude asks for.
6. Choose **Everyone at your organization**, or choose **Certain groups or organizational units** and pick them.
7. Agree to the terms and click **Finish**.
8. Ask staff to reload their open files.

If your company only lets staff install allowlisted apps, you can add Claude to the allowlist instead. Staff can then install it for themselves with the steps above. To remove Claude later, open it in the **Apps list** and uninstall it.

Turning Claude off does not change Gemini. Gemini has its own settings (see [turn Gemini on or off](/gemini-turn-on-off/)).

## Common issues

### Claude is not in the Extensions menu. What should I do?

Reload the file. Then check that the Google account you are signed in with is the same one you used to install Claude. If it still does not appear, your admin may have blocked Marketplace apps (see the next question).

### I see "This application is not allowed by your administrator". Why?

Your company only allows approved Marketplace apps. Ask your Google Workspace admin to add Claude to the allowlist or to install it for you. The steps are in the admin section of this page.

### The Claude sidebar opens but never answers.

Use Chrome, Edge or Safari. Firefox is not supported. Then reload the file and open Claude again.

### My earlier conversation with Claude has gone.

The sidebar keeps its history in your browser, for each file. A private window, another computer or clearing your browser data starts a new conversation.
