# Set up Google Workspace email in Outlook

> Add your Google Workspace email to Outlook with its built-in Google sign-in. Older Outlook versions need IMAP settings and an app password.

To use Google Workspace email in Outlook, add your account in a current version of Outlook and sign in through the Google window it opens. You do not need to type any server settings.

## Add your account (current Outlook)

This works in Outlook for Microsoft 365, Outlook 2016 and later, the new Outlook for Windows and Outlook for Mac.

1. In classic Outlook for Windows, select **File > Add Account**. In new Outlook or Outlook for Mac, open your account settings and choose to add an account.
2. Enter your full work email address and select **Connect** (or **Continue** in new Outlook).
3. A Google sign-in window opens. Enter your password and complete any [2-Step Verification](/workspace-2-step-verification/) prompt.
4. Approve the request to let Outlook access your mail.

A "new sign-in" alert from Google is normal. If your password is not accepted, first check that you can [sign in to Gmail](/gmail-sign-in/) in a browser.

## Older Outlook versions (IMAP)

Outlook older than 2016 cannot use Google sign-in. Choose manual IMAP setup and enter:

- Incoming: `imap.gmail.com`, port `993`, SSL
- Outgoing: `smtp.gmail.com`, port `587` (TLS) or `465` (SSL), with **My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication** ticked
- User name: your full email address

For the password you need 2-Step Verification on and an app password. If your admin allows only Google sign-in, this method will not work.

## Emails not syncing

- Update Outlook to the latest version.
- If mail is missing in Gmail too, see [emails not arriving in Gmail](/gmail-not-receiving/).
- Remove the account and add it again, especially after a password change.
- Admins: check that IMAP is on in **Apps > Google Workspace > Gmail > End User Access** in the Admin console.

## Common issues

### Outlook keeps asking for my password and rejects it. What do I do?

Google Workspace no longer accepts a plain username and password from Outlook. Update Outlook, remove the account, then add it again and sign in through the Google sign-in window.

### Which server settings do I use for Google Workspace in Outlook?

Only older Outlook versions need them: incoming imap.gmail.com port 993 (SSL), outgoing smtp.gmail.com port 587 (TLS) or 465 (SSL). Use your full email address as the user name.

### I get a "Too many simultaneous connections" error. Why?

One account can sync with up to 15 email apps at a time. Sign out of the apps and devices you no longer use.
