Gemini for schools & government agencies

Schools on Google Workspace for Education get the Gemini app and Gemini Notebook on every plan. Other Gemini features depend on the plan and on the Google AI Pro for Education add-on. Government agencies use the normal Business and Enterprise plans.

What each Education plan includes

Google sets the features for each Education plan. The main ones are:

The Google AI Pro for Education add-on is for users aged 18 or over, such as teachers and university students. To add it or change plan, contact Office Niaga; see renewals & upgrades for schools.

Students under 18

Google applies extra limits to users who are not marked as 18 or over. For primary and secondary schools, every user not marked as 18 or over is treated as under 18.

Students of all ages can use the Gemini app and Gemini Notebook, but some features are off for under-18s, such as Deep Research, Gemini Live and file upload in the Gemini app.
Under-18 students cannot use AI steps in Google Workspace Studio.
In Google Classroom, under-18 students get a student version of Gemini if the admin turns it on.

Make sure teachers and staff are marked as 18 or over, or they get the restricted experience too. See age settings for student accounts. To turn the Gemini app or Gemini Notebook off for students only, put them in their own organisational unit and follow turn Gemini on or off.

Notes for government agencies

Government agencies buy the same Business or Enterprise plans as companies, so they get the Gemini features of that plan (see what Gemini does & which plans have it). Google’s data commitments cover business, education and public sector customers alike: your data is not used to train Google’s AI models and is not shared outside your organisation.

Common issues

Can students under 18 use the Gemini app?

Yes, on Workspace for Education the Gemini app is available to users of all ages, with some features switched off for users not marked as 18 or over. Mark staff and older students correctly under age-based access settings; see age settings for student accounts.

Why do our teachers not have Help me write in Gmail?

Education Fundamentals, Standard and Plus do not include Gemini in Gmail. It comes with the Google AI Pro for Education add-on, which is only for users 18 or over.

Do government agencies get a special version of Gemini?

No. Government agencies use the same Business or Enterprise plans as companies, with the same Gemini features and the same data commitments.
