Open PowerPoint files in Google Slides & save as .pptx

You can open, edit and present PowerPoint files in Google Slides without installing PowerPoint. When you are done, download any presentation as a PowerPoint or PDF file.

Open a PowerPoint file

Upload the file to Google Drive first. See upload files to Google Drive if you need help.

  1. In Google Drive, double-click the PowerPoint file.
  2. It opens in Google Slides with a .PPTX badge next to the name. This means it is still a PowerPoint file. The first time, a Welcome to Office editing message may appear. Click Got it.
  3. Edit or present it as normal. Changes are saved in PowerPoint format.

Convert a PowerPoint file to Google Slides

Converting creates a separate Google Slides copy and leaves the original PowerPoint file as it is.

  1. Open the PowerPoint file in Google Slides.
  2. Click File > Save as Google Slides.
  3. Google Slides makes a copy in Google Slides format and opens it. Work in this copy from now on.

Reuse slides from another presentation

You can copy slides from a PowerPoint file or another Google Slides file into the presentation you are working on. Click File > Import slides, choose the presentation or upload the PowerPoint file, then pick the slides you want.

Download as PowerPoint or PDF

Download a copy when someone needs the file in PowerPoint, or to send a version that cannot be changed.

  1. Open the presentation.
  2. Click File > Download.
  3. Choose the format you need:
    • Microsoft PowerPoint (.pptx) for someone who will edit it in PowerPoint.
    • PDF Document (.pdf) for handouts and email.
    • JPEG image (.jpg, current slide) or PNG image (.png, current slide) to use one slide as a picture.

The file downloads to your computer. The copy in Drive does not change.

Common issues

My PowerPoint animations or videos look different. Why?

Most slides, text and pictures carry over, but some effects do not. Videos and charts inside the PowerPoint file become pictures, and SmartArt becomes a drawing. Check each slide before you present.

Should I keep the file as PowerPoint or convert it?

Keep it as PowerPoint if you send it back and forth with people who use PowerPoint. Convert it with File > Save as Google Slides if your team will keep editing it in Google Slides.

The file is too big to send by email. What can I do?

Share the Google Slides file with a link instead of attaching it. See share a Google Drive file. If you must attach it, download it as a PDF, which is usually smaller.
