Why logos and pictures do not show in some emails

Updated For SmarterMail Build 7692

Baca dalam Bahasa Melayu

Office Niaga Mail blocks pictures and logos loaded from outside servers by default, so an email shows a blank box where an image should be.

In Settings > Account, under the Webmail card, Show images from external websites is off by default. This stops a hidden tracking pixel from telling a spammer that your address is active and that you opened the email, a trick covered in Spot a fake login email.

Rather than turning images on for every email, add senders you recognise:

  1. Go to Settings > Account.
  2. In the Webmail card, find Allow Inline Images From, which shows 0 items.
  3. Click the pencil icon next to it.
  4. Enter the sender’s email address and confirm.
  5. Click Save at the top of the page.

Images from those senders now load, while everyone else stays blocked. Reply and receipt options on the same card are covered in Reply-To, default sender address and read receipts.

If you would rather see all images by default:

  1. Go to Settings > Account.
  2. In the Webmail card, turn on Show images from external websites.
  3. Click Save.

Admins set the default for every new mailbox in User Defaults (Domain Settings > User Defaults), under the same Webmail card and the same Show images from external websites toggle. Click Save. To apply the change to existing mailboxes as well, click Propagate.

To let a sender’s mail past spam filtering for the whole domain instead of just images, see Trust a customer’s or supplier’s domain.

Common issues

Is it safe to just turn on images for every email?

It is safer to add trusted senders one at a time using Allow Inline Images From than to switch Show images from external websites on for everything, since that also loads images from senders you do not know.

Why does blocking images help against phishing?

A hidden image can be a tracking pixel that tells a spammer your address is real and that you opened the email. Blocking it by default protects you the same way avoiding suspicious links does. See Spot a fake login email.

Can my admin change this for everyone?

Yes. Domain admins set the default in Domain Settings > User Defaults under the Webmail card. See Set default settings for every new mailbox.
